Are you better off now than you were a year ago?

Jimmy Carter started it. In a 1976 presidential debate with Jerry Ford, Carter asked, "Are you better off now than you were four years ago?"

Never mind that Ford had been president only two years, voters answered by electing Carter.

In a 1980 presidential debate, Ronald Reagan turned the tables and asked, "Are you better off now than you were four years ago?"

Reagan went on to win the first of two landslide victories.

For President Trump though, the more appropriate question comes from former New York Mayor Ed Koch, who asked voters, "How'm I doin'?"

So far so good, Mister President.

From the Washington Examiner:
Estimates predict the U.S. economy grew at an annualized rate of more than 3 percent in the fourth quarter of last year – just like it did in the two quarters before that. The economy has created more than 2 million new jobs, and the unemployment rate has fallen to its lowest rate in 17 years: 4.1 percent. We have achieved the lowest African-American unemployment rate on record, and the unemployment rate for Hispanic Americans has also hit historic lows. Chrysler has announced plans to bring jobs and production back to the U.S. from Mexico. And the stock market continues to set record high after record high.
From Jim Hoft at Gateway Pundit:
The Dow today stands at 26,071. It is up 42% since the 2016 election and 31% since last year’s inauguration.
Trump is a capitalist, our first president to never hold a government job.

His success in business shows. People rag on his four trips to bankruptcy court to renegotiate his loans. They ignore the hundred or so successful businesses he built. The Trump Organization employs 22,000 people. It pays taxes.

Hoft also wrote:
President Trump vowed to destroy ISIS. Despite President Obama saying that ISIS will be around for a generation, these murderers and terrorists in the Middle East were decimated over the past year.  Both Syria and Iraq have declared victory over ISIS and due to President Trump’s resolve, less than 1,000 ISIS fighters are estimated remaining.
President Trump met with the Pope, leaders of 50 Muslim countries and Israeli and European leaders in his first trip abroad. He demanded that the Muslim leaders remove radicals from their countries.
No, Trump did not demand a damned thing. That's what past presidents did and Arab leaders resented it.

He asked not what they could do for the United States but asked what the United States can do for their countries. That worked.

Trump also let our military run the war. There was no sitting in the situation room watching soldiers in battle as if it were a video game.

Trump confronted North Korea. Past presidents kicked that can down the road. We ran out of road. Next month, the two Koreas will walk together in the Winter Olympics.

We have achieved peace and prosperity -- much to the gnashed-teeth disappointment of the liberals, both in and out of the media.

Trump has brought clarity to America. We now know the depth of the loathing of America by the Democratic Party and the Washington Establishment.

We know now the media not only lies but fabricates.

We know now the National Review and others are counterfeit conservatives.

We know now the intelligence community spies on the political opposition, and not the actual threats to the nation's security. Eliminating the threat would reduce the budget for the spies, would it not?

But the biggest lesson has been that we can fight back and win.
We can end abortion on demand.

His two campaign songs I liked best were Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It."

The other was the Rolling Stone's "You Can't Always Get What You Want."

He's not perfect. His words occasionally make some of you wince, but his actions speak louder than words.

Our previous president believed America was just another country. He brought mediocrity to our nation.

Trump is letting us Make America Great Again.

Happy Anniversary, America.

  1. No question I'm better off financially than a year ago. A person would have to be incompetent loser to not be!

  2. The makers are better off---way better off,---the takers, not so much. And that's the way it oughta be.

  3. If you are a pragmatic person, you go with what works. Socialism doesn't work. Trumpism works.

    It's that simple.

  4. Less worried about the future of my kids and grandkids. Cannot imagine how bad it would be to have that gorgon as president.

  5. "Our previous president believed America was just another country." Not "just another country" but just "another mediocre to rotten country".

  6. The MSM sure aren’t better off. Their minds are still doing what they did on Election Night, running in a dozen different directions at once like an entire cage of crazed hamsters.

  7. I left a gig at the Martinsburg Library today and saw a guy on a street corner holding a sign that said, Trump Is Not Legit. I waved at him and yelled, "How's your 401K doin?" He said, I lost it all in 2009 and then (pretty sure) screamed an epithet. Folks, we're not dealin with sane people here. In fact, he looked more than a bit like James Hodgkinson...

Guess Mr. T is pro life, huh? Shiver me timbers. YOU GO MR. T!!!

  9. What the Left fears most ... and has every reason to fear ... is cultural revanchism.

Which is defined as: "a policy of seeking to retaliate, especially to recover lost territory."

  10. I fear that we are under estimating the other side - they are angry and motivated - we are too complacent and we cannot lose the house or Senate in 2018 - they will do everything to destroy Trump and have a degree of power to do so. How does our side stay motivated to do the hard work that must be done on the ground to make sure we don’t lose all the ground that has been gained?

  11. But the biggest lesson has been that we can fight back and win.

The Libertarians always said nobody could beat the Demos on social issues or the economy. I knew damned well they were wrong.

As well as weird. Thank you, Mr President, for proving me right.

    PS Gorgon. I love it.

  12. No, I am not better off this year than last year. At my age, we have used all of our savings and 401ks to live. Social Security is all that we have left, and they screwed us over this year. They gave us a raise, but then took more away in the Medicare Part B expenses.
